I never thought I’d be so happy to see Deathbird!

Welcome back to Shi’ar Space, fellow NewMu’s… it’s time for one heck of a fun (farm-less) issue of New Mutants!  Join me as I talk all about how much I enjoy these characters… while at the same time, am growing a bit weary of the tricks of the current DoX landscape.  We’ve got nothin’ happenin’ bad guys, and a cliffhanger that threatens with some mutant deaths.  We’re just a power-dampening collar away from the “hat trick”!

Also: Great listener feedback… and some more of me rattling off about my reviewing process for far too long!

I feel so much joy rereading this issue. Hickman does such a good job of writing these characters and their interaction. So many great monents from the recap (I love the disapproving look between Sam and Smasher when Bobby hands over his gift) to the big fights (Karma getting the big guy to punch himself in the face). I keep praising Rod Reis and have tended to give him more credit than Hickman but it really is the two of them working together that lifts this issue. I read the first Ecchs of Tens New Mutants issue by Rod Reis and Ed Brisson today and it still looks good but is nowhere near as strong as this.

You seemed to get stuck on Illyana being flirtatious, do you think we were meant to take it seriously? I thought she was just meant to be distracting them. Maybe I'm too willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as I've been loving how they're handling her. It's interesting to see her treated as being at the same level as Cyclops and Bishop.

Of course we're back to the farm next issue and I'm pretty sure I was not impressed with that issue.
